Snow


This week we have had lots of snow! The good: forced rest, lots of coffee, staying home enjoying family and getting things done here. The not so good: no walking, missing doctor's appointments, and loads of comfort cooking and baking. I tend to make lots of homemade soups... some healthy and full of veggies and protein, others creamy or carby... and homemade bread or rolls to go with it. It's good stuff! We also had a birthday with cake, and Valentine's Day with cupcakes and cookies. I used up a large bag of apples from fall to make a big pan of apple crisp, too. I crave baked potatoes and mac and cheese when I am cold, but I do add things like broccoli and steak to a small potato or put butternut squash in my mac and cheese to up the nutritional content. But the net result is no weight loss, still.

We are going out of town on vacation in a couple weeks to someplace warm and sunny! I expect that to be a very healthy break with plenty of activity and a switch to more summertime foods. I am going to maintain or lose a few between now and then, and expect to come home even lighter and with a renewed drive to eat healthy and be active. I'm almost completely healed from my car accident now and have very few restrictions left so am building back my strength with exercises and doing more at home.

I can't wait for spring! The snow is pretty but I am ready to move on and go forward.

Mmm, soup. I make soup in HUGE batches at a time--like enough for two weeks--and freeze most of it. Yeah, it means eating the same soup every day, but I make it good so I don't mind. It's always just vegetable soup, kind of like the hot version of a salad... today I made one with carrot/celery/onion base, and swiss chard, parsnip, cauliflower, peas, chopped green beans, and mushrooms. Tons of spices, too. I switch it up. I'm also into bean chili right now. It's a good base that I can add different meats to later. It takes some discipline, but I just don't think to make a creamy soup or anything like that--if I make clam chowder it's the Manhattan kind, which is very low-calorie. I just feel like, when I cook that way, I don't give myself the option of something that'll throw me off. Plus, it keeps me certain that I'm eating only when hungry. If I'm truly hungry, my healthy soups taste amazing.

That's an important thing to remember, I think. Food only tastes good in relation to our perception of it. Going on vacation should help. Changing context can help reset hunger and fullness cues for me because I'm not falling back on the bad habit of eating whether or not I'm hungry. Good luck. --cron

Good plan, cron! I know I have a couple servings of lower carb soups in the freezer. I love cabbage soup, too, which is just veggies and some ground beef. That will be my next batch. It's just as good as the creamier types.

That's great to hear you're almost healed from your car accident! What is your exercise plan and goals for after you're fully healed? Do you think you'll pick back up the biking across America challenge or will you stick with walking for a while?

That's a good plan and challenge for your vacation -- losing weight. I'm sure you'll be able to find a lot of healthy options and get some walking in!

Thanks! I am cleared for walking (unless there is pain) and recumbent biking (same). I do plan to pick back up my Biking Across America.

I want to take a moment to thank you. You don't know me, but I have been reading this blog for many years. When I found you around 2008, you were losing weight and I was just above your start weight at 281 pounds. Could it really be more than ten years since then? I admired you and related to you because I am close in age and have four children near the ages of yours. We have so many of the same struggles. Over that decade I have dieted on and off the entire time. I lost 36 pounds once (and gained it back plus more) and lost 22 pounds another time (and gained 18 back). I look at you and I think "Look where I could be if I had been as committed." I know it is my own fault for having many years of giving up. Months and years of not trying at all. Unlike your constant effort even when you gain back.

I want to say thank you for inspiring me to make it THIS TIME. I weigh 292 pounds today. You are one hundred pounds less than me. Let that sink in for a minute. We weighed about the same ten years ago and now, you are 100 pounds less than me and have had years weighing a normal weight while I have never even come close. I am not writing this to put myself down but to make you think about how wonderful you have done. I am starting right now, going back and looking at your foods and meals over the years when you have been succeeding. Please post more of your meals as you start losing again. You can be a mentor to so many. Thank you.

We're all in the same battle. Be proud that you are here, ready to start and reach your goals this time! Try not to stress about it. Calm and peace with your food is worth more than any diet book, diet app, or program, and I believe is the key to long term success. Keep us updated!
