Sad Update

I was starting to get over my illness (some kind of stomach bug with a massive headache) and though I was still feeling rough, on Tuesday I rode 4.4 miles. Wednesday I felt slightly better and went 5.0 miles. Then today I woke up feeling great, and proceeded to go out in the backyard where I gashed a big slit in my left leg. Blood was running everywhere and wouldn't stop and I ended up having to go for stitches. It is still bleeding though and whenever I get up and walk around the gauze soaks through and I have blood running down my freaking leg. The gash is on my calf near the knee and is pretty deep. I am so frustrated. SO frustrated. I want to bike, but know it would be a mistake. I know I need to let this heal for a couple of days before I start trying to ride again (at least I need to be able to walk around without it bleeding so much before trying to bike). Anyway, I am feeling pretty down and like everything sucks right now because not only can I not bike, but I can't walk the dogs or do any work around the house or go swimming with my daughter. It really does suck. Positive thoughts and prayers welcome. Will update when this stupid gash in my leg heals.

Hope you are healed soon. Is there any way to disconnect or move the pedal on that side out of the way, and just pedal with your good leg?

Still bleeding with stitches? Might want to go back...

I just had both of my knees replaced last November which required major incisions and bone destruction. I would suggest that you walk 10 minutes every hour and ice and elevate for a large portion of the rest of the hour. I was put on the stationary bicycle within several days, again followed by icing and elevation. It will probably take at least 4 weeks before you can get in a pool or lake, but walking and bike riding will be fine in a couple of days.

What a shame, but I'm sure you will soon be pedalling away again - and hopefully feeling stronger for the rest. Just a thought but if you're missing the exercise you could look into exercise videos for seated exercise, I know there are some designed originally for people who have reduced or very little mobility, that only use the upper half of the body. Hope the bleeding stops soon!

Don't worry about us, just concentrate on nursing your health back again and you can continue your biking goal!

Oh, s***balls! Dammit dammit dammit. This sucks so bad for you - hang in there!!

Crud! Just let that wound heal before you get going again on the exercise. Frustrating for sure, though, just when you'd found an exercise that you liked. Be strong; this will pass.

I've got derailed (pun intended) from walking by so many injuries! Seems like every June I have a major accident. You will rest and heal and come back stronger. I'm worried that you are still bleeding despite the stitches. Maybe a follow up call to the doctor? I'm sorry you are so frustrated, it totally sucks. Your determination to see this road trip through will not fade. Oh, and you can read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed and get inspired while you are down. Heal quickly!

it was deep and "dirty" so they did the stitches with gaps in between so it could drain and not trap possible infection in there. It was so gross, the Dr explained it after it was stitched and then pressed on my leg and the little gaps opened and blood and fluid came running out. He said it is supposed to do that. But gross, I hope it heals ok. As of this morning the bleeding/oozing is slowing down a lot, only drops.

Joanna~

thank you, that's helpful. It hurts like hell but I agree, have to move some... just not enough to get it bleeding again.

Gina~

yeah, I was concerned about how much blood was happening too, but see above about the Dr's explanation. I thought I would call today to double check if the bleeding isn't slowed. So far this morning, it is not soaking through the fresh gauze, just drops that are being contained by the bandage. If it keeps improving I think it will be ok. I've never had a wound like this before. I also figured I need to skip the fish oil this morning, since it is a blood thinner.

All~

Thank you, I am sorely (no pun intended) disappointed. But I know in the big picture, a few days not biking will not impede my progress. I will have to make up for it by biking further later to meet my goal, but that's just more incentive to get on the bike for longer and extra rides. Hopefully within a week (I hope just a few days) this wound will close enough that it won't be too bad to pedal.

Sending hugs. Everybody needs a rest period...this is yours...enjoy relaxing while you have this opportunity. Take care of that knee.

I think you and I might be related. Sorry to hear about your injury. Let your leg heal and then you can get back to it! The routes not going anywhere and will still be there when you return!

I am a huge supporter of your efforts. But there is a certain toughening up that needs to go on. Perhaps it is that I have been treated for Stage IV breast cancer for the last 8 years, a bilateral mastectomy, reconstruction, have had back surgery and both knees replaced. The thing I have learned through all of it is that pain is temporary and the brain cannot remember it well after the fact. Blood is just blood and ugly bruising will go away with time. When you are limited due to something, there is always something else to tide us over until everything is healed. A little victory for you right now would be to be very calm about the accident and enjoy getting better every day. My blog is www.lifehasitsupsanddowns.com.

I know a leg gash is absolutely nothing compared to what you have gone through... I acknowledge that, it is really nothing. So I understand that you had to get tough and power through a lot of your pain and I admire that strength! I am doing what I can do for now, it's not a long term thing and as soon as I can ride without re-opening the wound, I will... even though it will hurt. I don't think it would benefit me at all though to keep pedaling right after the injury, to the point of blood running down my leg into the floor while I ride. Yes, it's just blood and in the big scheme I agree it's not a big deal... but I do want it to heal. Given a couple of days I think it will be healed enough to bike again. Thank you for sharing your strength and perspective and I am sending you good thoughts and prayers for continued healing.

Can you do some light upper body workouts while healing?

Little update, not enough for a whole new post:

The bleeding is almost stopped today, just a few drops when I change the dressing. The pain is down by about half but makes it hard to sleep. It is looking good though, healing nicely from what I can tell, so I may try the bike in another day or two. If that makes it bleed more I will stop for another couple of days.

Thank you for the comments and emails of concern. It'll be ok, I just feel sad that I am getting so behind on my mileage.

Give that wound more time. A couple of days just isn't enough - especially if it is still bleeding. In the meantime, grab some hand weights and keep the upper body moving. Good luck!

hi Lyn,

because of you I am going to ride my bike across Wisconsin (my home state). I weigh 430 pounds but I do not have any health issues (yet) as I am young (23). You being a mother and having your health issues and pain but still doing this, inspired me to do it myself on a smaller basis. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don't know you but I love you like a sister for possibly saving my life by pushing me to do this. Thank you for the emails of encouragement. I wanted to publicly say, thank you, you have changed a life.

Please do not be discouraged!-- I have really enjoyed your blog since I found it. I am starting in the very beginning of my own to hold me accountable and I featured you this week.

Your story is like so many of us!-start again/stop again... ups and downs... I can relate!-- But your success is so encouraging!-- You BIKE!- Right now I walk 2-3 miles daily and I am ecstatic about that.

Prayers for a complete healing IN JESUS name. ~~Jennifer
