Juicing and Protein: the Nutrition in Juice (and Weigh In)

The last 3 days I have been tracking my calories on Sparkpeople because I was wondering about the calories, carbs, and protein I am consuming while juicing. It's a lot more carbs and less protein than I am used to, since I have been doing some form of low carb over the past few years. People often wonder how a person can get enough protein from juices; vegetables and fruits to contain small amounts of protein (generally 1 to 2 grams per cup raw), so when you juice a large volume of produce, you do get significant amounts of protein. I'd read that juice fasters generally get about 40 grams of protein per day. I am not fasting, so I only drink about 2 1/2 to 3 quarts of juice per day. Here's what went into my juices for today:

2 large stalks of broccoli, including florets and stems
2 apples
2 1/2 lemons
1/2 lime
1 medium zucchini
1 head of Romaine lettuce
3 stalks of celery
3/4 of an orange bell pepper
4 carrots
1 orange
1 1/2 cups of pineapple

The broccoli juice is a recipe I got from here. She calls it "Key Lime Pie juice" because it tastes like key lime pie. I think that's pushing it. If you really think hard about it you might make that connection when it is fresh, but after it sits awhile it pretty much tastes like raw broccoli. So this is one you have to drink right away, I think. Anyway, here's the nutrition breakdown for my juice today:

758 calories, 203 g carbs, 24 g protein, 5 g fat.

That is just from juices and not including any foods I eat. I listed what was in my juices over the last 2 days in yesterday's post. Here is the nutrition for those 2 days, juice only:

Wednesday: 963 calories, 233 g carbs, 20 g protein, 7 g fat
Tuesday: 686 calories, 165 g carbs, 22 g protein, 5 g fat

Yesterday I logged everything I ate to get a total intake. Along with the juices, I also had walnuts, almonds, half a banana, some avocado, salsa, and 1/3 cup canned pinto beans. I drink coconut water, too, for the electrolytes. Total intake yesterday was 1391 calories, 275 g carbs, 33 g protein, 32 g fat.

I feel good so will keep juicing for a few more days and see what the scale says. This morning I weighed in at 230 pounds which is up one pound from April 1. My weight this month stayed between 229 and 232.

You are proving that carbs are not the enemy. It is the type & quality of the carb not the quantity.

I hope you get the results for which you are looking.
