Good News, Bad News

Good news, bad news.

Good news: kitty will make a full recovery! Apparently the wounds under her chin were caused by an animal bite, hidden under her black fur, which then became infected. The vet cleaned her up and gave her a shot of antibiotics that is good for 2 weeks, so I don't have to force pills down her throat (yay). She is currently restricted to being an inside cat and I am cleaning her wound twice a day, during which she purrs in appreciation. SO glad I am not getting scratched instead!

Bad news: my laptop died :( The computer gurus said the hard drive is shot. This is not only annoying but terribly inconvenient, as it had all my links, favorites, sites, passwords, and pictures on it (but the computer guys recovered a lot of it onto a disk) and I am having to use my teeny netbook which has almost no hard drive. I can't buy a new laptop til I get back from my trip, which means (with shipping time) another 2 weeks or more without a laptop. Therefore, you will not be seeing as many posts and/or pictures from me as I had planned. However, I am super glad it was the laptop that died and the cat that is making a recovery, and not the other way around.

That's about all I can stand to type for now. Catch you later!

Hi, I just wanted to let you know thast I just found your blog and I'm looking forward to reading more of it. Sorry to hear about your laptop troubles--and I'm glad your kitty will be OK.

You know, while things are down, you could recycle old posts--or do a "top five" or something.

Oh my goodness, you crack me up! You're glad the laptop died and not the kitty. Me too! Too funny.

Lyn, have a great vacation. I'll miss reading your daily posts. I love how you always post religiously and how honest you are about your life. Sometimes, I think we might be twins.

Also - I was going to mention, nothing wrong with you making some money off of this blog. Post all the ads you want. I know you spend a lot of time and thought in your writing and it's greatly appreciated. You deserve some compensation.

Take care!

Today I just ordered an HP Envy 14 series and I did the quick ship model since it was pretty much exactly what I wanted and it'll be here Monday! With a free Xbox since my husband's a student (though he's also a Microsoft employee). Just an FYI--quick ship HPs not only ship w/in 24 hours but they're free 2-day shipping! Yay!

I have a Dell Inspiron that is less than 2 years old, and because I "dropped" it from about an inch off a carpeted floor about 5 months ago, had to have the hard drive replaced. UGH, but your story makes me grateful it could be done.

Glad that feline is going to be fine. Our pets are family members, to be sure. Have a great vacation.

Don't let them trick you into buying a new machine if only the hard drive is broken and make sure they give you back the old drive in case someone can get your files off it for you.
All it needs is another laptop hard drive.
You need to find out if it is scsi or IDE .The smaller sizes come up on ebay often and you can install a Linux if you don't have windows discs. There are some pretty good versions of Puppy Linux that are quite small to download.I have one that runs from a USB key. You can also use live CD's of Linux without a hard drive in the laptop at all.

Well thank goodness about the kitty!

Sorry about the laptop, but as an interim measure, how about getting a cheap, basic keyboard and hooking it into your netbook via the usb port? That way you can use it as a baby PC while you wait for your new laptop.

Thanks you guys for all the suggestions and support! They are really sweet, honest computer guys. They told me they could replace the hard drive for under $300 (includes reloading all the files and fixing operating system issues) but advised me it would only last me maybe another year since I have so heavily used the thing and overheated it (oops) so other components are likely to go out soon. Battery is shot, cord has been yanked too many times by kid and pup and is bent to the point of almost being broken (and has almost been chewed through as well). They don't sell computers there but told me an Asus would be pretty reliable. I found one for $399 I plan to buy when I get home.

I might hook up a keyboard to this netbook but man, it gives me a headache looking at this screen for more than 15 minutes at a time! I think it is a sign from the universe (to stop using the computer as an escape from life). I have gotten other signs too this week that I will share later.

Oh how I feel your pain re the hard drive, you think I'd get better at backing up having been through the same TWICE! Loving the blog btw!
(Janie scurries off to back up her aging laptop..)
