This weight loss business it tough. It can be lonely. Sometimes we can feel like we are all alone in our struggles... but the blogging community can be SUCH a source of strength! The support we can get from each other by blogging and commenting can make an otherwise long and sometimes difficult journey seem more pleasant. Who doesn't like getting comments and feedback on their blog? (I guess people who make their blogs private, right??)
There are so many little blogs popping up every day, started by people who are making the effort to change their lives and get healthy. Some folks go to real-life meetings, like Weight Watchers or Overeaters Anonymous, while others (like myself) look to the Internet for camaraderie. You can form real friendships through blogging, but it can be hard to get started, and tough to know just *how* to begin forming relationships that are supportive and beneficial.
When my blogging friend Bethany passed away earlier this year at the tender age of 33, I was struck by how many people had kind words for her and her family. I wished we (myself included) had been *more* of a support to her on her journey while she was still living. And I thought about how my father lived by the saying, "don't bring masses of flowers to me at my funeral and my grave, but bring them to me while I yet live, so I may partake in their beauty and fragrance with you."
And so the Bethany McDonald Memorial Blogroll was born. I wanted a place where bloggers old and new could find each other and give and get support. And I hope it has given that to some of you. But I can't help but notice how many blogs there still are with few or no comments, or who have not blogged in weeks. I try to get around and be supportive but there is no way I can keep up with everyone; that's where you all come in. There is someone out there feeling down and lonely, teetering on the brink of giving up. You could be the difference for them. You can be the light in someone's day.
And so I am asking that you participate in adopting a blogger today. All you have to do is head over to the Memorial Blogroll, browse through some of the blogs there, and pick someone you relate to a bit and think could use your friendship. Just go to their blog, read a few posts, and leave a comment or two in support. Then save them in your favorites and commit to yourself that you will keep up with that ONE blogger, at least once or twice a week, and get to know them through their blog and leave them some kind words each week. It only takes a few minutes a week to do this and could mean the world to someone! Odds are, the blogger you adopt will come back to *your* blog and leave you support, too! And you might form a lasting friendship. Believe it or not, one of my very best friends is someone I've never met in person but met online a couple of years ago (*waves to Karen*). My life would be emptier without her! And there are bloggers who have been right there reading me from the time I began with only 1 or 2 comments here and there... and they are very dear to my heart! You can form a meaningful friendship, giving and getting much needed support, just by being kind and offering friendship through blogging. Who knows, you might even save a life.
Please go and check out the blogroll. Share it with your blogging friends. Link it on your blog if you like. If you'd like your (weight loss related, non commercial) blog added, just leave me a comment here or drop me an email. I try to add people within a week of their requests. If you asked before and your blog is NOT listed on the blogroll, please ask again! I think I got everybody but if I missed anyone I apologise. I'll add you asap! I hope you will find a blogger or two on the blogroll who you think you can befriend, and I sincerely hope that lasting friendships are formed via the blogroll. Believe me, you will get back more than what you give out. Kindness is contagious! Good things will come back to you.
*p.s... the blogroll updates automatically and blogs are in the order of most recent posts, so scroll down near the bottom of the page to see blogs that have not been posting in awhile. Maybe they need some extra encouragement! Let's get every blogger some support :)
