November 1, 2009: 234 Pounds

I am so excited to report that I lost eleven pounds in October! I am stoked! I have been at this (weight loss and blogging) for over two years now, and if you look along the left side of this blog at the "Weight By Month" column, you'll see that 11 pounds is the most weight I have EVER lost in a month except for my very first month, August 2007, when I lost 13 pounds. I am totally doing a happy dance over here :)

Not only did I drop 11 pounds, but I lost 3 inches off my waist this month! I didn't take other measurements but I feel a million percent better than I did in September, that's for sure! Life is brighter, I had far more happy days and fewer dips into the darkness.

I would like to personally thank the fly who died in my ice cream cone, giving his life so that I could have a breakthrough epiphany that I am BETTER THAN THAT and needed to climb out of the fast food hell-hole. That disgusting moment will be burned in my consciousness forever. It truly changed me.

I want to do a little breakdown analysis of exactly HOW I managed to lose the weight this month. I always get a lot of emails asking me this anyway, since everyone wants to know the secret to losing weight. Well, there's no secret, and my way is probably not YOUR way. But I still like to analyze a little bit so I personally know what worked for *me*.

I count calories. I set a limit for myself of 1700 calories per day, and I tried not to go under 1200 on any given day. I log my calories on Sparkpeople. I also decided to exercise by walking and biking. Not back to strength training yet.

Here's the stats:

Days in October that I counted all my calories: 31
Average calories per day in October: 1472 (wow, it didn't FEEL this low)
# of days under 1200 cal: 3
# of days over 1700 cal: 3
out of control episodes: 1 right here (2461 cal that day)

Exercise for October:
Fitness walks outside: 7 (five were 30 minutes, two were 45 minutes)
Recumbent bike rides inside: four , 30 minutes each (I also had a 6-minute bike ride but that was just a warm up before I was interrupted)
Walks to the park with my kids: 6

Since some of these exercise events happened on the same day (like going to the park with kids and then biking later), I actually exercised on 16 days out of 31.

Other interesting facts for October:
Fast food eaten: 0
Sodas: 0
Meals eaten out, at restaurants: 6
Birthdays celebrated: 2
Holidays celebrated: 1
Festivals attended: 2

I also dealt with very sick children, ear infections, and some bad news about a friend's health this month. But overall, my mood was good.

I enjoyed (regular, not diet) ice cream twice, birthday cake once, small amounts of candy several times (mostly dark chocolate but a piece of fudge once), pizza once, a few chips here and there. My food, though, was *mostly* delicious lean meats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables supplemented with a little bacon, sausage, cheese, butter, and ham for flavoring. I'd say 90% of my calories were *very* nutritious.

My goals for November: aim for 1700 calories again but increase the exercise a bit. I only did "formal" exercise 11 times in October and I'd like to make it 20+ times in November, plus the walks to the park with kids. If I get into a stall, I will add strength training back in, twice a week. If not, I'm gonna put it off. I do love strength training but have a lot going on right now, plus the holidays. I'd like to save it for January and just focus on aerobic exercise for now.

That's it! A new month for us all. What will you do with yours?

Well done girl! You are right on track. kKep up the good work, excellent loss considering the odd treats and exercise. Ramp up to 20x a month and you'll be cooking with gas. What is changing the most is the "head", you're really nailing this now, all power to you. I enjoy your blog very much, 35 kilos down now myself, so yahoo for both of us!

That fly is a hero!

Seriously, way to go, Lyn. Eleven pounds in one month is huge, especially seeing as how you've been at this for a while.

Keep up the great work!

Yay for 11 pounds down! That's awesome! :)

My 11 pound monthly losses are long gone, but I still managed 5 pounds in the month of October, so I'm really happy with it! I've gone from my high weight of 272.5 lbs to 153.5 pounds! I can hardly believe it when I see those numbers!

I am thrilled for you! Imagine carrying around 11 less pounds. Just try and pick up 11 pounds of weight and you'll recall how your joints felt. I am embarking on a combination of exercise and diet starting today. The problem in the past was that I did one or the other, but not both together. It's silly that I did that, but I felt like I could only focus on one or the other. Now, with exercise a basic daily habit, it's easier to focus on the food aspects. I like your charting. I think it's a brilliant idea. I keep a log on my laptop and once a month I weigh and measure and once a week I just weigh. You've inspired me to see what I can knock off in a month! Thanks so much and keep it up--you obviously have figured out the formula for your body. Everybody has a different one. Once you get focused on how yours reacts, you'll know just how to live the rest of your life at a nice happy and healthy weight.

Really loved this post, very interesting. It is really good to know that you can still lose awesome amounts with having some treats. My blog this weekend was about that very thing, not deprieving ourselves, keep up the good work.

That is great news on your weight loss in October...we are almost the same weight now, and started at the exact same weight!

I am on WW, but must admit I don't count every day because I am just.that.lazy. I think my goal for November will be to count points daily, regardless of how many I go over!

Oh well done Lyn! That is a fantastic result, but it's not surprising as you have been so disciplined and determined.

(I need discipline and determination to grab me by the throat and beat me into submission. I want to lose weight, I need to, but some days I just don't focus on it, and am distracted by other things/woes so I haven't developed that determination to form good eating and exercise habits.)

Reading your blog is always inspiring. You have done so well.

Way to go! I have to tell you something- I lost about 50 pounds recently, but somehow lost the "drive." I've been eating horribly and have gained back 10. I was really scared because I didn't know how (or if!) I would be able to get back on track. You know what helped? Reading about how YOU have gotten back on track! It helped me get back into weight loss mode and I've been back for about a week. I feel great! So I want to thank you for inspiring me, you've been a big help!

love how you track so you can apply the old

what do I mean to be doing?,
what I am actually doing?,
is it working?

and obviously it is working because 11 pounds is REALLY good!

Congratualtions! I just found your blog and you are truly an inspiration. You seem so honest as you write about your good AND bad days. I used to suffer with weight problems really badly when I was younger, so I completely understand your feelings/thoughts. Luckily now I have my weight under control and I know that you are well on your way to your goal weight. Welldone!
