The Beauty in Good Food

I had a second good day today, thank goodness. It has seemed that I would do fine for most of a day and then collapse in a heap around dinnertime and eat too much or eat the wrong things. Getting a grip on the eating has ALREADY made me feel better about myself. Just this morning, when I got up I looked in the mirror. I LIKED what I saw. I actually thought I looked pretty, attractive, nice, happy. When just a couple of days ago I was looking in the mirror each morning and seeing a fat, aging woman. How is it that when I am eating well I actually SEE a different me in the mirror?? In two days I "see" a younger thinner me when I know I probably actually LOOK the same. But my brain, it messes with me. It sees a fatter me, an older me, when I feel bad about myself. I'll have to remember that. I really am beautiful.

Today I went to the Farmer's Market. I was a little worried when I realized it is already October and I wasn't even sure if the market would be open, or have many options left for produce. But I was pleasantly surprised! Lots and lots of fruits and veggies, and it will be open through the end of the month. I didn't get as many veggies as usual because I am feeling slightly overwhelmed already with the veggies I have. I just want to enjoy the last of summer's refreshing fruits! I bought:

1 cantaloupe
5 great big juicy peaches
a pint of strawberries
a pint of blackberries
5 pretty red-and-gold pears
a gigantic bunch of dinosaur kale
3 ears of bicolor sweet corn
a pound of grass fed beef (ground round, extra lean)
1 spaghetti squash
2 Delicata squash

And at home, I have 5 butternut squash sitting on the counter from the garden. I also already have spinach, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, onions, sweet potatoes, baby red potatoes, blueberries, apples, a plum, watermelons, bananas and uncountable bags of various frozen vegetables of every imaginable sort.

My meals for today:
Breakfast: tea w/2% milk & agave nectar, and a bowl of oatmeal made with canned pumpkin, cinnamon, flax, walnuts, almonds, vanilla, mashed banana, a bit of real maple syrup, and a splash of 2% milk. Heavenly! Perfect fall breakfast.
Lunch: big salad made with bagged romaine salad mix, brocco-slaw, spinach, cucumbers, bacon bits, slivered almonds, 6 oz chicken breast, and some yummy Bolthouse Farms Creamy Yogurt Ranch dressing. Also some blackberries and strawberries.
Snack: Pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, made from 2% milk, no whipped cream
Dinner: ratatouille topped with mozzarella and an egg, baked til the egg was just cooked through. One ear of corn with a teaspoon of butter. A few more blackberries.

Total for today: 1566 calories.

I walked around the Farmer's Market, and then my daughter and I walked a couple blocks to the post office. And after we did some shopping then we went to the park and walked for 15 minutes, then she played a bit.

I feel so tired, but it's a good tired. In fact I feel pretty great!
It's going to be a beautiful fall weekend, and I can't wait to look in the mirror in the morning :)

Yum...now I am in the mood for fruit salad. I just wish berries weren't so expensive!!

I love Farmers markets too! We don't have a really good one near us, sadly.

Dinosaur kale has gotta be the coolest name for a vegetable. You wouldn't even have trouble getting a kid to eat that. "Mom, I don't want it." "But it's DINOSAUR kale, Tommy!" Oh, and pumpkin-y oatmeal is delish. That post made me hungry.

Don't get yourself too tired, Lyn.

The most important thing for safe healthy weight loss is to cut down on salt and salty food. Although salt has no calories, it does hold excess water in the bodies of overweight people, and so lowering your salt intake allows your body to excrete some of that excess water weight. - And means a load of weight off your poor feet and much more energy for you.
