Breakfast!!

The other day I got a box in the mail... a present! I love presents, so I rushed to open it, with kids clamoring around hoping my longtime buddy Dave had sent me a cheesecake, a box of Godiva chocolates, a mushroom log, or a Hot Diggity Dogger as he is prone to do. (I love Dave. What a guy.) Well, it wasn't from Dave, but it was a good stash nonetheless. It was a "Breakfast Kit" from Quaker, including a box of their new Oatmeal Pancake Mix, a bottle of Aunt Jemima lite syrup, a pancake flipper, a cuuuute heart-shaped pancake mold (because, you know, oatmeal is good for HEART HEALTH), and a HUGE whisk that scared the wires off my own little pansy whisks.

So, the pancake mix: it's pretty healthy looking, as far as Nutrition Facts go: per 2 four-inch pancakes, there's 220 calories (prepared as directed), 2g fat, no cholesterol, 4g fiber (1g soluble fiber) 4g sugar and 5g protein.
Sunday morning, I gathered my stuff to cook. You have to add eggs and milk. I chose to use fat free milk and Egg Beaters instead of whole eggs. The jar of blueberry preserves is for topping because I was out of fresh berries.
I whipped up the batter and got cooking.

Here's one after I flipped it over. Mmmmmm.

They looked so cute waiting on a plate for my kids to come eat them.

And they even left one for me! I topped mine with some natural almond butter and those blueberry preserves I showed you earlier. Add a turkey sausage link and a nice, juicy Clementine... what a tasty breakfast! Yes, the pancakes are very good. Nice texture. Delicious!

Here's something for you dedicated, loyal folks who read these posts even when they *don't* say "giveaway" in the title: If you'd like to win your own Breakfast Kit with a box of Quaker Pancake Mix and a cute heart pancake mold (but probably no syrup... there were, um, "issues" with the syrup leaking in some other packages), leave me a comment telling me your favorite pancake topping or cat decoration. USA only, please. I'll announce a winner on February 9th!

Favorite Pancake Topping: Cinnamon butter!

Favorite cat decoration: Wrapping Paper! (It doesn't matter what kind... Christmas, birthday... My cat somehow manages to pull them all off, haha.)

I love the heart-shaped pancake mold, and your cat is TOO adorable. :D

Your photo of the finished pancake is exactly how I like my oatmeal: with a little peanut butter and jelly!
So I imagine a pancake would be delicious that way, too. MMMMMMM!

Well, my favorite is maple syrup, but I've been trying new things on them lately and just got some peach pecan butter that is just amazing. Oatmeal pancakes sound so good right now...

Okay, I totally ROFLed at decorating the cat! I used to 'decorate' the trees in the garden with the clothes pegs when I was a wee one :-D

I've been looking to get my hands on this mix for a while now and I've been craving a good/healthy pancake for weeks now! I like my semi-sweet chocolate chip pancakes best!!

Ha ha! That's awesome, decorating the cat. My favorite cat decoration was when my kids took a little yellow rain slicker off a stuffed animal and put it on our kitten. That was hilarious. But the cat didn't think so...It was hilarious, b/c the kitten was so little that the clothes fit him perfectly. I think I have a picture somewhere. :D

My favorite pancake topping is apricot syrup. My favorite cat decoration? I like to put the self sticking miniture Christmas bows on my cat. Right in the middle of the back of her neck where she can't reach. Watching her try to get at it and get it off is hilarious! Love your blog!

Oooh, the heart shaped pancake is so adorable - MUST HAVE.

My favorite pancake topping is...wow, you know I haven't really eaten a lot of pancakes since I changed how I ate. My step dad (who recently passed away) used to make these awesome really thin crepe-style pancakes. He would sprinkle white sugar lightly on the pancake and then roll it up and eat it. In his memory, I shall nominate SUGAR PANCAKES ;) Ha. Let's face it, I'd probably put natural peanut butter or apricot preserves on them, but I miss him.

What a cute idea to use metal cookie cutters for your pancakes! I want to do that the next time I make pancakes for me and my kids!

Can't offer a cat decoration, since we are animal free in our household. My favorite pancake topping is the best blueberry sauce EVER that we purchase at a small vineyard up in Massachusettes when we go on vacation. YUMMMMM

Well, I like to grate an apple and mix in the batter. Then I have some homemade, no- sugar added apple butter, that I put on top. The apple butter is so yummy and if you cook the pancakes themselves in butter flavored spray, you don;'t need any extra on top. To make the aple butter, I peel and core one 2 pound bag EACH of red delicious and granny smith. Place in crock pot on low over night. About 16 hours later, add cinnamon to taste. They break down on their own and are done when reduced to about a fifth and are a dark brown color. It still has some texture to it, but if you like it really smooth, you can you the blade setting on an emulsifier. If you can it, it will last for six months, but we eat this this on oatmeal, english muffins, pancakes, so it's never around longer than 2 weeks. And all it is is apples and cinnamon. It makes the house smell so good while it's cooking. Oh and if it starts looking like it has too much liquid in it, just prop the top so steam can escape.

Great blog! I've really enjoyed it since I found it on Monday - I've already subscribed!

I'm not sure if this counts as cat decoration but I used to snip the hairs on the end of my cats tail so that they were all the same length, giving him a "flat top". Maybe it's b/c I was a military brat and I thought everyone needed super-short hair?

As far as pancake toppings, I am a fan of the syrup/peanut butter combo, but my personal favorite is just a little plain butter (or spray butter, these days).

I love lots of butter and not so much syrup. Not so healthy, I know. I am also sometimes in the mood to slather a bit of peanut butter on my pancakes. Yummy!

As for cat decorations, well, it's fun to put a Walmart sack around their tail with a rubber band. Not very nice but funny.

Favorite pancake topping is definitely cashew butter or peanut butter with a little cinnamon.
Favorite cat decoration would be folded up kleenex wrapped and secured around all 4 feet. Put 'em on a hardwood floor and they try to shake their little booties right off...

Stages of Change said...

Pancakes are hard pressed to be better than with some butter and blackberry syrup.

The cat comment and picture was hillarious btw.

And more importantly, I always enjoy hearing about a friend or family member of someone trying to be healthy who has actually noticed the change in the person (mentally as much as physically) and changed their usual "bad" food presents, or something that facilitates "bad" food, for a healthy present. Now that is change I can believe in.

Have a good one!

Before I started on my journey toward health, I preferred peanut butter and syrup (I know, I know - no wonder I've got to lose weight!).

Now, I like to top them with unsweetened frozen (well, thawed) sliced strawberries, frozen/thawed blackberries and a dollop of Cool Whip Free.

Princess Dieter said...

I like to boil down some frozen blackberries with some splenda (or sugar or agave if you don't do artificial) to make blackberry syrup. Also, mashing or blending a banana and some pecans or hazelnuts and cinnamon into the batter makes them really good.

I love this idea! I totally wanna make my girlfriend some heart-shaped pancakes on valentine's day now. Thanks for the inspiration! I wonder if we'll like the oatmeal pancake mix as well as we like our usual bisquick.

My favorite pancake topping used to be peanut butter and a couple gallons of maple syrup, but now I put vanilla and cinnamon in the batter and top with light butter and a T or so of regular maple syrup.

Don't fall into the light maple syrup trap, btw. It's just regular maple syrup watered down and priced the same (or more).

I have put oatmeal in my own homemade pancakes and they were good so I imagine this is good also. I love (but usually resist) butter, peanut butter, and syrup on my pancakes. Since I am trying desperately to get healthy I have been putting frozen (of course thawed) strawberries on them. Not quite as delicious as the peanut butter but still pretty good.

My daughter liked to decorate her cat as well. She use to dress him in doll clothes and make him walk around in them.
