Water and Tea: Questions Answered

Hello. So did you get out of the bathroom and stop peeing long enough to come and read this blog? Oops, there you go again... off to the bathroom. When you drink a lot, you pee all the time. This concern was expressed in some comments left on the first Habit-A-Week Challenge: fix your fluid intake. It's probably the main reason people quit drinking enough water. They have jobs or are busy people and don't have time to go to the bathroom every half hour, or maybe they just need some sleep that is uninterrupted by peeing five times a night. What to do?

Some people say it gets better over time... that your body gets used to the water increase and eventually you pee less often. I did some reading on this, to see what people's personal experiences have been, and some folks do claim that your bladder "settles down" after about a month of drinking more water. Others say it never changes. So try and give it some time, and see if it's tolerable. If not, try and get in as much of your water requirement as you can without being on the potty all day. The way I strike a balance is this: I drink the majority of my water before 1pm. I finish up by 6pm. That way, most of my peeing is done in the morning. And yes, in MY experience, it gets better after a few weeks.

There was another question on the blog, by Dancingqueen:
Do you make your iced green tea by making hot tea first, and if so, do you do it every night so it's ready?
I also got this same question via email, so let me address it here.

Here's how I make my green tea:

I have a little teapot... a stainless, whistling one I got at Bed Bath and Beyond. I put 4 cups of filtered water in there and when it whistles, I take it off the heat (you don't want boiling water on your green tea). I wait a minute or two, then add either 8 teabags or 2-3 tablespoons of loose leaf tea. I put on the lid, steep it for a minute or two (no more than 2 minutes, or it tends towards bitter) and then I remove the tea bags or pour the tea + leaves through a strainer. I let the tea cool a bit and then pour it into a glass pitcher that has 4 cups of cold filtered water in it. I keep that in the fridge. I usually add a small squirt of lemon juice because I read a study that lemon juice increases the availability of the health benefits of green tea.

In the summer, I used to make it in a gallon jar on the deck (sun tea) but then I read that this may not release all the beneficial compounds of the tea, so I started steeping it.

If I don't have a pitcher already made, I just use my Sunbeam water-boiler to boil one half cup of water, let it cool a minute, add one tea bag (I love Bigelow green tea with lemon), steep 1-2 min, remove bag, add cold water, pour over a bunch of ice. Yummy.

If I want the tea sweeter I add 1-2 oz of pure pomegranate juice at the end. (for a 12-16oz glass).

I really hope that some of you will take my suggestion to start drinking green tea (and white tea) for the health benefits. It is truly an amazing (and painless) preventative medicine. Take a moment and read about the anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and anti-stress benefits associated with various teas. Green tea has many other benefits as well. Do some research. Learn for yourself. Lots of studies out there.

You can use any good bagged tea for your beverage, but I love the teas I get from Indonique Tea & Chai Cafe. They are really great quality, loose leaf teas... so many varieties like Jasmine Scented Green tea, Pomegranate Safflower White tea, Ginger Peach Orange Green tea, and lots of Oolongs and Black teas. But what I love... the tea I drink every morning to start my day, is Masala Chai. Oh it's so yummy. I mix it half and half with their roasted Mate tea, and use 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup nonfat milk. I add a bit of agave nectar. This is my favorite beverage of all time!! I am definitely plugging Indonique, because they do have the best tea I have ever tasted. I've been drinking it for about 6 months now. And what I love is, with any order you can ask for five FREE tea samples! You just list the 5 samples you'd like in the comments section when you order. They are pretty nice sized samples, too... enough for several cups. And when you use a good quality tea like these, you can re-use the tea leaves to brew several cups. Very cool.

Okay, so I hope you'll STICK to this healthy habit of getting enough water/tea. Try and hang onto it when you add your next NEW healthy habit tomorrow. Leave a comment and let us know how you did with your first healthy habit this week!

Caffeine (and pop when I used to drink it) does the URGENT bathroom thing to me - NOT water.

Yes, what goes in must come out - but I want it to - the alternative is to RETAIN water!

You are absolutely right - I do the majority of my drinking early in the day!!!

I didn't do this week's challenge too much, mostly because I already drink at least 4 liters of water every day...sometimes it's more like 6.

BUT I did try Tazo green and black teas this week and found that when I have them on an empty stomach I have a BAD problem with it - like it creates more acid in my stomach or something. I noticed it when I realized I was eating small snacks every 20 minutes because my stomach was aching - which I took to be that I was hungry. Turns out not so much. MANY Tums later and I've stayed away from that brand of tea first thing in the morning.

As a side note, drinking lots of water TOTALLY dies down. I've been drinking at least 4 liters every day since mid-July and I don't pee nearly as often. Side benefits? I do feel fuller, I am able to distinguish when I am hungry versus before when my body was craving water and I was just feeding it. AND my skin looks MUCH better - just healthier with a glow.

I am going to try your tea recommendations though - because as it gets colder here in Denver, cold water will not be so appealing. :)

I have been drinking a lot of water! I drink Diet Soda's as well but REALLY trying to cut back. I have recently within the past month or so started adding Green Tea, I use a 4 cup coffee maker and just heat up the water in that then pour over my tea bag. Easy Peasy! Then use Splenda to 'sugarize' if needed.

When I first started drinking a lot of water, I was in the bathroom pretty much for every 8 oz I drank... my body did get used to it though and things slowed way down. I try to drink 1/2 my water while I'm at work, and the other 1/2 before bed. I usually only wake up once in the night, if that, to pee though!
