Update On My Gain

Thanks to Hillary for requesting an update on my eating and exercise. Always good to keep it real!

As I have mentioned, I had a rather large regain. Last month I went up TEN pounds (11 from my lowest weight) and this month really has not been much better. I gained 6 MORE pounds this month. Why? Mostly fast food, and stopping the exercise. Not watching what I eat. Same thing that makes everyone else regain weight. I noticed that I just FELT fatter, my jeans that were extra-loose and about to be retired became the jeans that fit perfectly again. My knees started hurting again, badly, and I started getting frequent migraines. Heart palpitations are back. My mood is not as bright, and my energy level dropped to nothing. All effects not just of regaining weight, but also of eating junk instead of nutritious food.

There comes a point where enough is enough. I hit that point last week. I said, "Look self, you took the whole freaking summer off, and now it is time to get real again. To make this part of who you are forever. Now it's time to quit indulging and start taking care of yourself."

My 1st goal was to stop buying junk (including NO FAST FOOD). I am doing pretty well with this. There is very little junk left in the house, and I have kept the fridge stocked with fruits and veggies from the Farmer's Market. Getting back to eating fruit when I want a sweet treat has been easy, but adding back the vegetables has been harder. I do love veggies but it is so much easier to grab something carby and unhealthy. Working on breaking that habit now. Planning is the key.

My next goal was to get back in the habit of exercise. I am doing pretty well with this also. Yesterday I rode my exercise bike for 30 minutes and lifted weights for a good session. It's hard for me to get on the bike with a toddler running around. She is not easily entertained. I am working on getting a few things moved into my exercise room for her to play with while I bike. If I wait until she is in bed at night to bike, I am so exhausted that I just never get on the bike. It works better to get it done in the morning for me.

Despite my changes, the weight is not budging. Well, I am down one pound, but seeing 230 on the scale is NOT making me happy. I was down to 214, and I want to get back there ASAP.It's only going to happen with hard work and dedication. I think my mindset is right, and I am back on track now.

Today my menu is going to look something like this:
Breakfast: Egg Beater omelet with 2% American cheese, slice of whole grain toast, and some grapes or berries. Iced green tea. (Here is where I think, "hey, if I had some baby spinach in the fridge I could fit a veggie into my omelet"... have to put baby spinach back on the shopping list!)
Snack: fresh peach, few almonds
Lunch: 4oz chicken breast, sauteed beet greens with onions, iced green tea
Snacks: roasted green beans, fresh cantaloupe
Dinner: baked fish, roasted fingerling red garnet sweet potatoes, salad, baby carrots

There ya go. If I can't bike I will take the kidlet for a nice walk outside.

By the way, this morning when I got on the scale naked (as I have done almost daily for the last year), my 3 year old said, "You are all wobbly!" Yes, I sure am, LOL. And I think I will probably always have some wobble to me. But it's getting better, and by next summer I will be able to enjoy so many more activities with ALL my kids. I am really looking forward to that!

Pasta Queen reported a gain of between 10-20 pounds. I appreciate her honesty, yours too. But it is discouraging--even though I know it is the rule to regain. Our bodies work against us losing weight.

Could it be the change of seasons affects our bodies? I know it affects total cholesterol levels. I've read that you can count on your total cholesterol being around 30 points higher if measured in the fall--even though everything else is the same. And I can attest to that happening to me.

I know my motivation is waning right now. I still want to get the rest of my 20 pounds off--had lost 15.7 but regained 2.1. I know that doesn't sound like a lot--but from personal experience, having lost and regained 50 pounds twice--it's the little foxes that spoil the vine syndrome...little weight gains add up to big ones. That's how I regained the 20--a couple of pounds increase over the course of 10 weeks. If only I'd have dropped the anchor when I was up 3 or 4 pounds. But I didn't...

I'm just dog paddling right now...hoping at worst to stay in the same spot and at best not giving up totally.

Man, I've been struggling just to hold ground! :(

I do wonder about seasons, cause it could be some old mechanism of "get fat in fall to make it through the winter."

But since I struggle all year, well, ahem...

You are doing the right thing by making a plan and trying to get back in the swing of things. Just think of how many people who just give up? You have done so well, and I have no doubt you will get back on the wagon!

Every day is a new day, Lyn....You will get back in the "groove" and start losing again. With your new mindset, I know you will become the person you want to be - A healthy eater with an active lifestyle - and you WON'T be all wobbly. :)

You know how to do this and you'll get back on that horse in no time. I was reading something about people who've lost major amounts of weight the other day and it was talking about the things they have in common. One that made me think of you is the one that said "at some point, they all had to take a break" and "at some point, they all gained a little in the process." You're normal. Just don't give up!

Another thought - if it's easier for you to bike in the mornings cause of the kiddo, what about getting up half an hour earlier and getting it done first thing? Or maybe... does she take naps? Working around kids can be hard, but there is always a solution. I remember when I was a child, my grandmother would watch the neighbor kids for an hour while their mom walked and then she would watch us for an hour while my grandma walked. Maybe you could do something like that. Where there's a will there's a way!

Better now then never. You are going to do it. On the thought of seasons, I know they affect me as fall becomes winter. Seasonal deficit. However, this year I found the summer really hard because here in Ontario, CDN it rained so much. I don't think we had a dozen days of sunshine this year. In fact rain levels were more than double the highest recorded level. I gained 10 pounds over the summer and motivation took a vacation. I so need to get on track now too! Blogging seems to help me stay the course to change.

I am sorry to hear about the gain... I think it's a late response to all the crap you had to go through earlier this year(and are probably still dealing with). Try to be strong, although I know it's easier said than done. You're on the right track right now, and you've been a champion. In my eyes, you're still a great source of inspiration, and you know how to make this work.

Another fantastic post Ms. Lyn. This is the leaf turning time, and when it starts to get cold (even if you live in a place where it doesn't get cold), our bodies have the desire to gain. Summer is hard with kids around, Fall is hard when we crave comfort food. Winter is hard because all we want is hot food. Spring is hard because we want to shove all existing fresh produce in our gullets.

It's always hard. But I think it is interesting that a ton of us readers and bloggers are all experiencing the same thing, a gain or a stagnation.

But your posts always make my day. Your wit and candor make your plight all of our plights. <3

It's been an ugly summer for me, too. I'd like to meet all the people who lose weight over summer like the 'experts' say. I find it easier to lose in fall, and the winter holidays don't bring on the gains that the 'experts' predict either.

Right now, however, I've been bouncing between 302 and 309 for months, and it's getting pretty old. Today I'm going to the gym and pool for a 5 hour workout. I just NEED to get below that 300 lb mark!
